Eastern Suburbs opening bowler Ricky Joseph took all 10 Johnsonville wickets in the Pearce Cup on Saturday.
Ricky Joseph is the first bowler in 13 years to take all 10 wickets in an innings of a Wellington premier club cricket match. The Eastern Suburbs opening bowler took 10-35 from 12.3 overs at Alex Moore Park on Saturday to bowl out Johnsonville for 70 in the first innings of their Pearce Cup match. Normally when a bowler has a chance to bring up such a rare milestone, you will hear about how the captain was unable to get the ball out of their hand. But after a decent night out on Friday, the 27-year-old said the opposite was the case. "I tried to get that ball out of my hand. After eight wickets I had about three overs when I didn't get anything and I'd bowled 10 [overs] and my fitness isn't the highest," he said with a laugh. "I said I'd bowl one more and I got the ninth and I thought I'd have to give it a crack. I had an over at the No 11, but he stuck around, and then it was the next over after that I got it." After bouncing out his best mate Chris Leach for his first wicket, the remaining wickets were caught behind the wicket or lbw. Twice he took two wickets in two balls, only for Johnsonville batsmen to see off the hat-trick balls. "They were pretty straight, they played and missed one of them and they hit the other one." After Easts scored 241 in their first innings Joseph bowled only four overs for no wickets as Johnsonville were reduced to 44-4 in their second innings. "I was pretty knackered to be fair. I got in at 11.59pm the night before." With more energy next week, he should be able to snare a couple of wickets to take him past his career-best 12-for he took in a Pearce Cup final against Karori seven years ago. The last player to achieve the 10-wicket feat was former Wellington Firebird Mayu Pasupati, when he took a record 10-31 captaining Onslow against Norths at Nairnville Park in March 2003. Before that it was England international Alex Wharf in November 1996, as he took a hat-trick in his 10-72 playing for Johnsonville, also at Alex Moore Park, against Hutt District in November 1996. Doug Pollock was Johnsonville's captain that day and is now Easts club chairman. He said he did his utmost to get he ball out of Wharf's hand that day. "Wharfy finished it off with a hat-trick, all bowled, but I was trying to get him off. I said 'Wharfy, you're knackered, come off' and he said 'no, no, one more, one more'. He'd bowled 15 overs on the trot at that point so was pretty tired. "You need a bit of luck and he was a bit like Ricky - well he was a bit quicker than Ricky - but he just bowled straight and got all his wickets caught in the slips or behind, lbw or bowled." Wharf went on to take another hat-trick the week after for match figures of 16-103. Joseph will have his work cut out to match those figures next Saturday.
